If your sharepoint website only shows "Failed to connect to the configuration database" then you wanne try the "Repair Sharepoint settings" wizard linked to from the EBS Sharepoint addin Taskpane:

 

This runs the standard WSS "SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard" you may also start through the Administrative Tools in the start menu:

Most of the times you just need to "Next" click right through the wizard to reconfigure/repair the settings and incorporate recent updates like the WSS 3.0 Servicepack 2 into WSS.

Running this wizard also is a solution to the same issue in SBS 2008.
